What happened
India installed about 44.6 GW of solar capacity in FY2026 (April 2025 to March 2026), up about 87% on the previous year, and about 6 GW of wind, according to JMK Research & Analytics, published on 10 April 2026. As reported:
- Ground-mounted solar accounted for about 34.8 GW and rooftop solar about 8.7 GW.
- Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra led utility-scale solar additions.
- For rooftop solar, Tamil Nadu ranked third with about 600 MW, behind Maharashtra and Gujarat.
- Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra led wind additions.
Why it matters
Tamil Nadu's position in rooftop additions reflects strong industrial and commercial uptake of on-site solar in the state. For factories considering rooftop systems, structural checks and load matching remain the main determinants of value. See rooftop solar structural checks and matching solar to your load profile.
