What happened

Speaking at the inauguration of the eighth Windergy India conference in Chennai on 8 October 2026, Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi urged the Tamil Nadu government to grant connectivity to renewable energy projects and clear other bottlenecks holding them up. According to DT Next, he said the industry should not suffer because of decisions taken by the previous state government, and that the Centre would support the state under Green Energy Corridor Phase III.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar asked for the corridor to be extended to more parts of the state, saying wider transmission could let Tamil Nadu absorb several times the renewable growth currently expected. Joshi said the request would be considered.

The minister also referred to around 4,100 MW of repowering potential in Tamil Nadu from turbines below 2 MW, and to the proposed 500 MW offshore wind project off the state's coast, as reported.

Why it matters

For developers and landowners in Tamil Nadu, grid connectivity is often the step that decides whether a project moves from land to construction. Delays in connectivity approvals hold up otherwise ready projects. See grid connectivity basics and wind repowering in Tamil Nadu.
