What happened

At Windergy India 2026 in Chennai, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government is formulating strategies to repower about 25 GW of ageing wind projects, Energetica India reported on 9 October 2026. He described the identified projects as nearing the end of their operational lives, with equipment needing upgrade or replacement.

As reported, the minister cited around 59 GW of operational wind capacity nationally, 6.05 GW added in FY 2025–26 and about 3 GW added between April and September 2026, against a target of 100 GW by 2030. Locations, eligibility criteria and the implementation framework had not been disclosed.

Why it matters

Much of India's older wind fleet — including large parts of Tamil Nadu's — uses small, low turbines on strong wind sites. Repowering can produce far more energy from the same land, but it touches land leases, grid connections and existing power purchase agreements, not just equipment. Details of the national framework will matter for owners deciding between life extension and repowering.
