What happened
India added 24,558 MW of renewable energy capacity between 1 April and 30 September 2026, according to MNRE data reported by Saur Energy on 8 October 2026. As reported:
- Solar accounted for about 20.8 GW of additions and wind about 3.1 GW, with smaller amounts from hydro.
- Cumulative solar capacity reached about 171 GW, of which roughly 126 GW is ground-mounted and about 33 GW grid-connected rooftop.
- Cumulative wind capacity stood at about 59.2 GW.
- Renewable capacity including large hydro was reported at about 299 GW.
Why it matters
The pace of additions keeps pressure on the parts of the system that take longest to build: land, transmission and grid connectivity. For industrial consumers, the steady growth of rooftop and open access capacity also reflects how mainstream on-site and off-site renewable supply has become. See open access vs group captive.
