What happened
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said on 4 August 2026 that the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana had crossed 50 lakh household rooftop solar installations, according to a PTI report carried by Outlook Business. As reported:
- About 14.8 GW of rooftop capacity has been commissioned under the scheme.
- Daily installations rose from about 5,000 in October 2025 to about 16,300 in July 2026, and July 2026 recorded over 5 lakh installations — the highest month so far.
- About Rs 28,024 crore in subsidy had been released through direct benefit transfer.
Why it matters
The scheme is aimed at households rather than industry, but its scale has expanded the base of rooftop installers, inspectors and suppliers, and has normalised net-metered solar on distribution networks. For commercial and industrial buyers, the relevant routes remain on-site systems and off-site supply. See CAPEX vs OPEX solar for factories and net metering vs gross metering.
