What happened

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission notified the Tamil Nadu Electricity Grid Code, 2026, replacing the state's 2005 grid regulations and aligning them with the Indian Electricity Grid Code 2023, SolarQuarter reported on 18 March 2026. As reported, provisions include:

  • Rules for declaring commercial operation and trial runs for generating stations.
  • Day-ahead generation forecasts from renewable generators within a ±15% tolerance, relaxed to ±20% during the monsoon.
  • Low- and high-voltage ride-through capability for renewable generators.
  • Faster revision of schedules, and voltage limits for 220 kV and 110 kV systems.
  • A Grid Code Review Committee to recommend future changes.

Why it matters

The code applies to all users of the intra-state network, including captive and open access consumers. For new projects, forecasting, ride-through and commissioning requirements should be built into design and EPC scope from the start.
