What happened

Tamil Nadu's energy department Policy Note for 2026–27, presented by the state's energy minister, sets a target of raising renewables to 50% of the state's energy mix by 2031, SolarQuarter reported on 27 August 2026. As reported:

  • Installed capacity was about 46,846 MW as of 1 July 2026, of which about 28,348 MW was renewable, including about 11,686 MW of wind and 15,279 MW of solar.
  • Storage projects listed include 1,000 MWh of standalone battery storage under viability gap funding (due December 2026), 1,500 MWh under the Power System Development Fund (targeted September 2027) and the 500 MW Kundah pumped storage project (due June 2027).

Why it matters

A higher renewable share in Tamil Nadu means continued demand for land, grid capacity and storage in the state, and more attention to how wind's monsoon peak and solar's daytime peak are balanced. See wind seasonality and battery storage for industrial sites.
